because many many people i know live by this personal code. i’ve even found myself to live by this code sometimes. but basically, the code goes that if the application that you use is an app that you don’t pay for or don’t pay hosting for, then it’s not yours.
and because you don’t pay for it, you have no rights when it comes to your privacy. youtube, myspace, facebook and other online apps make this apparent from the start. most people just don’t read the fine print anymore. but next time you do, you probably would’ve read something like “your privacy is important to us, but it is not guaranteed.”
how else do you think those fools pay for their stuff? on advertising alone? they sell your e-mails, login information and other sensitive information to vendors which either sends you spam or login to your account to post their own spam “bulletin”.
there are many dangerous people out there who feel the same way. as long as someone doesn’t pay for a service, then technically all information linked with that service is open to anyone and everyone that can access it. filling out a few simple forms doesn’t mean you all-of-a-sudden “own” that space you are given at myspace or at facebook or whatever other service you signed up for.
even google admits to helping the CIA to track down people who use their email service.
so for those of you who ask me why i’m always so big on security and clean and structured coding, it’s because of that. boogie offers you his protection because your privacy is not guaranteed.
