how to properly photoshop tattoos.

i remember aquiring these dvds (which are pretty awesome btw) after being inspired to photoshop a tattoo on myself. i’ve looked around and there are no other decent tutorials that teach you how to properly do this in photoshop. i won’t get too much into detail since the dvd spends almost an hour teaching the process, but the process is all pretty simple in actual reality when you skip all the chit chat mumbo jumbo. so considering that, i will be brief and quick with my steps. they are more or less just guidelines actually. you have plenty of creative freedom here. nothing is set in stone. this process is simply a list of guidelines to follow.

  • make sure the tattoo images you have are big enough to fit on the subject’s body part. don’t get anything too small. it will look horrible.
  • color does not matter with your tattoo. it could be as colorful as you want.
  • size your tattoo over your body part and set the transparency to 40%. here is where you do a warp transformation and warp the tattoo to fit around the curves and contours of your subject. if it’s an arm, warp the tattoo to make it seem like it is curving with the arm. same goes for the back, neck, etc. don’t curve the entire thing, only the parts that need it.
  • lasso/erase whatever part of the tattoo that doesn’t touch the subject’s skin, obviously.
  • set the transparency back to 100% and set the blend mode of your tattoo to soft light.
  • depending on the lighting and the image, you can adjust the levels of your photo and of the tattoo separately to help blend everything in.
  • if your tattoo needs it, give it a gaussian blur to blend it in better. you can even lighten up the opacity. that’s all you really need to mess with to blend the tattoo perfectly: opacity, levels, brightness and blurriness.

here are the befores:

tattoo before 1 tattoo before 2 tattoo before 3

here are the afters:

tattoo after 1 tattoo after 2 tattoo after 3
