so i finally got a chance to crack open flex builder 2 and gave life to my first flex application. i’ve learned so much from this class and today was no different. from start to finish, i was able to take my layered-design in photoshop, export all of my buttons and skins, code up the base structure of my application, link all of my skins and functions to each button and dynamically enter in values from a text field into my teacher’s laptop through an open port. when all was said and done, my application could add a new entry and delete an entry. but i’ve noticed one thing about flex and it’s users.
for one thing, the design view reminds me too much of dreamweaver’s wysiwyg editor. it was pretty accurate, however a good developer shouldn’t have to rely on the design view. it’s just laziness in my opinion. a good developer should be able to code something together, not drag and drop visual elements onto a stage and arrange them however they like.
flex does have me hooked, however. i used to be so torn between xhtml, php and actionscript. flex development is a combination of all of that. what other programs allow you to combine actionscript 3, php/ruby and css classes and code? well ok, you could maybe get away with developing all of that with the humble text editor. but flex builder is definitely something i plan to develop rich applications with in the future.
personally, i’m still very-much hooked to developing my xhtml, php, seo and normal flash projects, but this is definitely not the last flex project you’ll see from me.
here are some screens of the modified project. application is not fully functioning yet, but it will be posted in a few weeks.
